Know the Facts

  • Most people who say they want to die just want the pain to go away but don’t know any other option

  • Most people who contemplate suicide give warnings

  • Talking to someone about suicide will not cause them to become suicidal. It could have the opposite effect by making it safe for them to talk about their fears

  • Males are four times more likely to kill themselves than females but females are three times more likely to make an attempt.

  • Suicide occurs in all communities regardless of ethnicity, age, gender, or social economic status

Warning Signs

  • Making threats

  • Having the means and a plan

  • Feeling hopeless that things can’t get better

  • Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities

  • Feeling trapped – like there’s no way out

  • Increased alcohol or drug use

  • Withdrawing from friends, family and society

  • Giving away prized possessions

  • Agitation, unable to sleep or sleeping all the time

  • Dramatic mood changes

How to help

  • Be aware of warning signs

  • Be supportive and listen

  • Don’t sit in judgment, lecture or act shocked

  • Don’t tell them this is wrong

  • Be willing to ask if they are thinking about suicide

  • Be direct and talk openly and freely

  • Offer empathy, not sympathy

  • Don’t promise to keep this a secret – it could be deadly

  • Offer hope that alternatives are available and help them get professional help
